DEXA (Bone Densitometry)
Low-dose X-ray measurement of bone mineral density; the gold standard for diagnosing and monitoring osteoporosis.
DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is used to diagnose osteoporosis and osteopenia, assess fracture risk, and monitor treatment. Measurements of the lumbar spine, hip or forearm yield T-scores and Z-scores that quantify bone mineral density.
The scan takes about 10-15 minutes, involves a very low radiation dose and requires no special preparation.
